Summer in Philly is that girl - full of sunshine, family fun, and hidden gems that don’t require a ton of planning (or spending). If you’re looking for ways to keep your kids busy, active, and off screens this summer, I’ve rounded up some of our favorite kid-friendly things to do in Philadelphia - including parks, splash pads, zoos, and FREE activities!
Whether you're planning a full day out or just need to fill a morning, there’s something here for every Philly family.
Philly has so many amazing parks, but these are a few of our go-to spots:
FDR Park (South Philly): A total gem - wide open space for scooters and strollers, plus nature trails, a lake, playground, and free fishing programs.
Bartram’s Garden (Southwest Philly): Gorgeous riverfront views, gardens to explore, and they host awesome FREE kids’ events (like fishing and bike lessons).
Clark Park (West Philly): Shady trees, a big playground, and space to picnic or let the kids run free.
Vernon Park (Germantown): A community favorite with local events and lots of space to play.
Nothing saves a summer day quite like a splash pad. These are FREE and scattered throughout Philly neighborhoods:
Sister Cities Park (Center City): A mini oasis with a wading pool and boat pond for little ones.
Seger Playground (South Philly): A fenced-in splash pad next to a playground - perfect for toddlers.
Moss Playground (Northeast Philly): Has a cool water feature and nearby swings for big and little kids.
📍 Find more splash pad options on Philadelphia Parks and Recs.
Philly is lucky to have two amazing, family-friendly zoos:
Philadelphia Zoo: A full-day adventure with big cats, the new KidZooU, and fun events throughout the summer. Pro tip: pack a picnic and save on food costs!
Elmwood Park Zoo (Norristown): Smaller and easier to walk, especially with littles. Don’t miss giraffe feedings or the ropes course for big kids.
➡️ If you qualify for EBT, check out the PAWS Membership - one year of access!
There are so many free or low-cost festivals that welcome kids and families:
Southeast Asian Food Market at FDR Park: Open every weekend! Think incredible food, music, and a space where kids can run while you snack.
PECO Multicultural Series at Penn’s Landing: Free festivals celebrating global cultures with food, music, and performances.
Parks on Tap: Yes, it’s beer for the grownups — but many stops have kids’ activities, music, and open play space.
Some of Philly’s best programs are completely free - and perfect for all ages:
Free Fishing at FDR Park & Bartram’s Garden – They provide the poles and show kids the basics!
Free Bike Riding Lessons at Bartram’s Garden – Especially great for beginner riders ages 4–12.
Free Archery at FDR Park – For older kids and teens who want to try something new.
Keep an eye on local event calendars and rec centers - a lot of Philly’s summer programming is supported by Parks & Rec and is totally free.
You don’t have to spend big to make big memories. Whether you’re grabbing snacks and hitting the splash pad, checking out the zoo on a discount, or just enjoying a quiet day at the park, Philly has plenty to offer families all summer long.
So pack a bag, grab the sunscreen, and go explore your city - one popsicle, splash, and playground at a time.
