The first day of camp can be a mix of excitement and anxiety for kids and moms alike. If your child is feeling jittery about starting camp, you’re not alone! Here are some friendly, easy-to-read tips to help both you and your little one feel more confident and ready for their big adventure.
Open up a conversation with your child about their feelings. Ask what they’re excited about and what they’re nervous about. Reassure them that it’s okay to feel both excited and a little scared. Sharing your own positive camp experiences from your childhood can also help them feel more at ease.
If possible, take a trip to the camp before the first day. Familiarizing your child with the environment can make it feel less intimidating. Show them where they’ll be spending their time, from the playground to the dining hall, so they know what to expect.
Introduce your child to their camp counselors ahead of time if you can. A friendly face on the first day can make a big difference. Knowing that there’s a caring adult they can turn to will provide an extra layer of comfort.
Let your child bring a small comfort item from home, such as a favorite stuffed animal or a family photo. Having something familiar can help soothe their nerves throughout the day.
In the days leading up to camp, practice the morning routine. Get up at the same time, pack a camp bag, and talk about what the day will be like. This will make the actual first day feel more familiar and less overwhelming.
Your attitude can greatly influence your child’s feelings. Stay positive and enthusiastic about camp. Remind them of all the fun activities they’ll get to do and the new friends they’ll meet.
Establish a special goodbye ritual for drop-off. Whether it’s a secret handshake, a hug, or a silly song, this can provide a comforting and consistent way to say goodbye each morning.
Talk to your child about making new friends at camp. Encourage them to introduce themselves to other kids and join in activities. Remind them that everyone else is new too and probably looking for friends just like they are.
Plan a special treat for after the first day of camp. Whether it’s ice cream, a trip to the park, or a movie night, having something to look forward to can help your child get through the day with anticipation.
After the first day, ask your child about their experiences. What did they enjoy? Was there anything that made them feel uneasy? Keeping communication open will help you address any ongoing concerns and make the rest of the camp experience smoother.
Remember, it’s completely normal for kids to feel nervous about starting something new. With a little preparation and a lot of encouragement, you can help your child overcome their first day of camp jitters and embrace all the fun and excitement that camp has to offer.
