Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity to teach your little ones about the rich and diverse cultures that make up the Hispanic community. Running from September 15th to October 15th, this month is all about celebrating the contributions, history, and traditions of Hispanic and Latinx people. The best part? There are tons of fun and interactive ways to involve your kids!
Here are five creative and easy ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with your family!
Introduce your kids to stories that celebrate Hispanic culture through books! From vibrant picture books to exciting tales, there are plenty of wonderful stories written by Hispanic authors that showcase traditions, values, and experiences. Some great reads include "Islandborn" by Junot DÃaz and "Carmela Full of Wishes" by Matt de la Peña. These stories are perfect for reading together and discussing afterward!
What better way to celebrate Hispanic culture than through food? Pick a traditional dish like tacos, empanadas, or arroz con pollo, and cook it together as a family. Involve your kids in simple steps like measuring ingredients, mixing, or setting the table. You can even talk about where the dish comes from and its significance in Hispanic culture.
Hispanic artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are famous for their unique styles and contributions to the art world. Take some time to explore their work online, or better yet, get hands-on and let your kids try creating their own masterpieces inspired by these artists! Break out the paints, markers, or crayons, and encourage your little ones to express themselves through art.

There are tons of great movies that highlight Hispanic culture in fun and engaging ways. Films like "Coco" and "The Book of Life" introduce kids to traditions like DÃa de los Muertos, while also teaching valuable lessons about family, love, and remembrance. Plan a family movie night, pop some popcorn, and cozy up together to watch one of these heartwarming films.
Many cities, including Philadelphia, host events and festivals during Hispanic Heritage Month. From parades to cultural performances, these events are perfect for families who want to experience Hispanic traditions firsthand. Check out local listings for family-friendly events like craft workshops, music performances, or dance shows.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with your kids is a fun and meaningful way to introduce them to the beauty of Hispanic cultures. Whether you’re reading books, making art, or cooking a delicious meal, each activity helps your little ones understand the importance of diversity and inclusion.
