Earth Day is coming up on April 22, and it's the perfect chance to slow down and teach our kids how to care for the world around them. Whether you’re a crunchy mama or just looking to be more eco-aware, Earth Day is a great opportunity to build habits that stick - and make it fun for the whole family.

Let’s be real: We’re all busy. But raising mindful kids who respect the planet doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are a few simple, intentional ways to celebrate Earth Day as a family this year:
You don’t have to be an expert on climate change—just talk with your kids about the importance of taking care of the Earth. Use age-appropriate language and focus on the things they can do, like turning off lights or picking up litter.
“We only get one Earth, so we take care of it like we take care of each other.”
Nothing builds appreciation like time in nature. Head to a local park, take a nature walk, visit a garden, or simply explore your neighborhood. Point out bugs, birds, and plants. Let them get messy and curious!
Bring gloves and a trash bag and clean up a small area—your block, a playground, or a nearby park. Kids feel empowered when they see the impact of their actions. Make it a game: Who can collect the most bottle caps?
Whether it’s a garden, a small indoor herb plant, or wildflower seeds in a cup—let your kids get their hands dirty. It teaches patience, responsibility, and the magic of growth.
Don’t have space? Try seed bombs or donate to a tree-planting organization.
Snuggle up with picture books or chapter books that spark curiosity about nature, animals, and our planet.
A few kid-approved titles:
The Earth Book by Todd Parr (Young kids)
What a Waste by Jess French (Big kids)
One Earth: People of Color Protecting Our Planet by Anuradha Rao (Teens)
Skip the dollar store haul and use what you’ve got! Try these:
Make bird feeders from toilet paper rolls
Create a robot out of boxes and bottles
Use leftover paper scraps for collages
Let your kids see you:
Carrying reusable bags
Refusing plastic straws
Recycling the right way
Shopping secondhand or local
Little eyes are always watching.
