Black History Month is the perfect time to start a new family tradition that celebrates culture, honors history, and brings everyone closer together. If you’ve been looking for a meaningful and fun way to connect with your kids while teaching them about Black excellence, I’ve got you covered! Let me share how my family celebrates and some ideas to inspire your own tradition.
In our home, Black History Month is a time of creativity, learning, and connection. Every year, my daughters and I work together to create new designs that highlight Black figures who inspire us. From Harriet Tubman to Malcolm X, each person we feature becomes part of our family’s learning journey.
My oldest daughter, Madison, plays a special role in this tradition. After we’ve researched and learned about a historical figure, she designs coloring pages to bring their stories to life. It’s her way of putting her unique touch on Black History Month—and let me tell you, her creativity shines! These coloring pages have become a staple of our blog, and I’m thrilled to share them with families like yours.
This tradition isn’t just about learning history—it’s about spending quality time together, sparking curiosity, and celebrating the contributions of Black leaders, thinkers, and creators.
Ready to create your family’s Black History Month tradition? Here are a few easy and meaningful ideas to get started:
Family Coloring Sessions
Download our free printable coloring pages (designed by Madison!) and set up a cozy coloring session. Each page features a Black historical figure or empowering symbol, giving you the perfect opportunity to talk about their contributions while coloring.
Learn Together
Pick one figure to learn about each week. Watch videos, read books, or check out online resources to dive into their story. Keep it fun by letting your kids choose who to learn about next!
Create Art Inspired by History
Take a page from our tradition and create your own art inspired by Black history. Whether it’s coloring, painting, or even making a collage, your kids will love expressing their creativity while celebrating their heritage.
Wear Your History
Celebrate in style by rocking t-shirts that feature Black historical figures or powerful quotes. Check out our Black History collection for designs your family will love!
Share the Love
Encourage your kids to share what they’ve learned with friends and family. Whether it’s showing off their completed coloring pages or explaining the story behind their favorite design, it’s a great way to spread knowledge and pride.
Starting a Black History Month tradition doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s all about finding activities that resonate with your family and making them part of your yearly routine. Grab our free printable coloring pages to kick things off! They’re a fun and educational way to bring Black history to life for your kids.
Remember, every tradition starts with a single step. Whether it’s a coloring session or a heartfelt discussion, the memories you create will last a lifetime. So gather your family, get creative, and let’s celebrate Black excellence together!
