If you’re looking to introduce your kids to Kwanzaa - or deepen the traditions you already celebrate - books are such a beautiful way to do it. Kwanzaa is all about family, culture, unity, creativity, and purpose… which honestly makes it perfect for little ones.
I pulled together a list of Kwanzaa books written by Black and BIPOC authors, filled with vibrant illustrations, kid-friendly explanations, and the spirit of the holiday. These are great for storytime, classrooms, or adding to your family library.
A sweet, simple introduction to the seven principles - perfect for toddlers and young readers. Bright illustrations, short text, and easy explanations make this one a classic.
My First Kwanzaa by Karen Katz
This beautiful book tells the story of seven brothers who must learn to work together - a perfect way to explain ujima and unity. The message is powerful, and the artwork is stunning.
Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story by Angela Shelf Medearis
One of the best “big kid” introductions to the holiday. It explains the history, symbols, and meaning behind each principle while still keeping things fun and engaging.
The Story of Kwanzaa by Donna L. Washington
A great read for early elementary kids. Kevin walks readers through each day of Kwanzaa and how his family celebrates. Super relatable and really fun for young readers.
Kevin’s Kwanzaa by Lisa Bullard
A heartfelt story about a little girl worried that her brother won't make it home in time for Kwanzaa. It’s sweet, easy to read aloud, and beautifully captures the meaning of family.
Together for Kwanzaa by Juwanda G. Ford
A cozy animal story inspired by Brer Rabbit tales. It’s not a direct teaching book — it focuses on community, kindness, and coming together to help someone in need.
Li’l Rabbit’s Kwanzaa by Donna L. Washington
If your little ones love hands-on activities, I’m creating a free Kwanzaa coloring page you can download and print at home. It’s the perfect add-on while you read these books together — kids can color the kinara, the symbols, or even write down the principle of the day.
If you want to make Kwanzaa extra special this year, check out our Kwanzaa Collection - full of family-friendly tees, skirts, outfits, and kid pieces designed right here in Philly. The colors, the symbols, and the messages align beautifully with the holiday’s seven principles.
It’s a fun way to stay connected to culture, spark conversations with your kids, and look adorable in your family photos.
