Water safety is a critical topic for parents, especially during the summer months when children are more likely to be spending time in or around bodies of water. Here are some tips for keeping your children safe around water:
Always supervise children around water: Never leave children unsupervised around water, including swimming pools, lakes, oceans, and even bathtubs. If you need to step away, designate another responsible adult to watch them.
Teach your children to swim: Enroll your children in swimming lessons as early as possible. Knowing how to swim is an essential skill that can potentially save their life. My daughters attend Gold Fish Swim School. Get your first swim lesson free by using our family code.
Establish water safety rules: Establish clear and consistent rules around water safety, such as no running or diving in shallow water, always wearing a life jacket on boats, and no swimming alone.
Use appropriate safety equipment: Ensure that children wear properly fitting life jackets when participating in water activities, especially in open bodies of water or when boating.
Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Enroll in a CPR course to learn this valuable life-saving skill.
Be aware of potential hazards: Be aware of potential hazards in and around bodies of water, including strong currents, hidden rocks or debris, and the risk of drowning.
Consider additional safety measures: Install pool fences, pool alarms, and safety covers to prevent children from accessing the pool without supervision.
By following these tips, parents can help keep their children safe around water and prevent accidents from happening. Remember, water safety should be a top priority all year round, not just during Water Safety Month.
