Black History Month is the perfect time to teach our children about Ruby Bridges and other civil rights leaders who made history. Ruby Bridges was just six years old when she bravely walked into an all-white school in 1960, becoming a symbol of courage and change. Her story, along with many others, teaches kids about bravery, equality, and the power of standing up for what’s right.
One of the best ways to introduce kids to Ruby Bridges is through books! Here are a few great ones:
These books help kids understand why Ruby’s story matters and how her bravery changed education forever.
We’ve created a free Ruby Bridges coloring page to help kids engage with her story in a fun, creative way! Coloring while talking about history helps kids connect with what they’re learning. Download your free printable below:
Our “Brave Like Ruby” t-shirt is a great way for kids to wear history proudly! Seeing Ruby’s image on their shirt reminds them that even kids can make a difference. Check it out in our Black History Collection.
While learning about Ruby Bridges, introduce kids to other heroes who fought for justice, like:
Having conversations about these leaders helps kids see how one person can change the world. Use our Black History Month stickers as a fun and interactive way to teach your children about Black leaders.
Ruby Bridges stood up for fairness in schools. We can teach kids to stand up for others, be kind, and include everyone—whether it’s at school, the playground, or in their daily lives.
