Back to school season is exciting - but let’s be real, it can also be a bit overwhelming. Between shopping for supplies and getting everyone back on schedule, it’s easy to overpack or forget the basics. If you’re wondering what really needs to go in your kid’s backpack, this post is for you!
Here’s a simple, stress-free guide to packing your child’s school bag - whether they’re starting Pre-K, heading into middle school, or doing a mix of in-person and virtual learning.
Stick with 1–2 sturdy folders and 1–2 notebooks, unless your child’s teacher has specific requests. One folder for homework and one for classroom notes usually does the trick.
Keep it basic:
2–3 pencils
1 eraser
Crayons or colored pencils (depending on age)
A glue stick
Kid-safe scissors
Tip: Choose supplies with your child’s favorite colors or characters to make it more fun!
Hydration is key - especially in the early weeks of school when it’s still hot out. Pick one that’s leak-proof and easy to clean.
Even if your child eats school lunch, it’s nice to have a backup snack packed just in case. Granola bars, fruit, or crackers are always a hit.
Accidents, spills, and playground messes happen. Tuck a full change of clothes (including socks!) in a gallon-size zip bag at the bottom of the backpack - just in case.
Depending on your child’s school, it might be helpful to pack a small hygiene kit with travel-size tissues, hand wipes, or sanitizer.
Book for reading time
Hair ties or headbands
Small comfort item (for littles who are new to school)
Class supplies like tissues or disinfecting wipes (check the teacher’s list)
Let your child help pack their bag the night before. It teaches responsibility and helps avoid the morning scramble.
