Starting middle school is a big deal - for our kids and for us as moms. There are new hallways, new teachers, more responsibility, and (let’s be real) lots of emotions. If your child is feeling a little anxious about heading into 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, one of the best ways to ease their nerves is through books.
Whether it's reading about characters going through the same things or just having a quiet moment to escape, books can really help our kids feel seen and supported.
Here are a few great reads that offer relatable stories, comforting advice, and a boost of confidence for tweens and early teens:
A graphic novel about being the new kid at a private school where you don’t always fit in - funny, real, and perfect for ages 10–14.
“Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life” by James Patterson
This one's super popular for a reason- it’s silly, creative, and totally gets how middle school can feel overwhelming sometimes.
“From the Desk of Zoe Washington” by Janae Marks
A heartfelt story about friendship, identity, and standing up for what’s right - written by a Black author and so empowering for young girls.
“Real Friends” by Shannon Hale
Middle school drama and changing friendships are tough. This graphic novel nails it in a way that’s funny and super relatable.
“Just Roll With It” by Veronica Agarwal & Lee Durfey-Lavoie
A great pick for kids navigating anxiety and big transitions - all wrapped in a cute, illustrated story.
