October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while we’re always busy caring for our families, this is a great reminder to also take time to care for ourselves. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, and it’s important for us to stay on top of our health—because when we’re at our best, we can be there for the people who need us most.
Whether you’ve been directly affected by breast cancer or know someone who has, this month is all about raising awareness and encouraging early detection. Here’s what you can do to prioritize your health and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
While breast cancer can affect anyone, certain factors can increase your risk. These include a family history of breast cancer, getting older, or carrying certain genes like BRCA1 or BRCA2. Make sure to talk with your doctor about your family’s medical history and any other risk factors.
One of the best ways to detect breast cancer early is by regularly performing self-breast exams and scheduling routine mammograms. Try setting a reminder on your phone to do a quick self-check once a month—it only takes a few minutes and can make all the difference! For women over 40 or those with higher risk factors, doctors often recommend getting a mammogram every 1-2 years. If you’re unsure when to start or what’s best for you, ask your healthcare provider.
A healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk of many diseases, including breast cancer. Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Regular exercise is just as important—whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a fun dance session with your kids. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. It’s good for your body, your mind, and your overall well-being.
As moms, we often put everyone else’s needs before our own, but self-care is crucial for our health. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, managing stress, and taking time to relax. Whether it’s reading a book, enjoying a quiet cup of tea, or going for a walk, finding moments of peace in your day helps keep both your body and mind healthy.
I know we tend to put off our own appointments because we’re too busy with work, kids, and everything else. But one of the best things you can do for yourself this month is to schedule that annual check-up. Regular screenings, even when you feel fine, are key to catching potential issues early. So, get that appointment on your calendar!
As many of you know, my family’s journey with health is close to my heart. My daughter was born with a congenital heart defect, and her health is always a top priority for us. Just like we stay vigilant with her heart check-ups, I’m reminded that my health as a mom is just as important—because staying healthy means I can continue being there for her and the rest of my family.
Taking care of yourself, especially when it comes to things like breast cancer, is just another way of showing up for your family. Remember, early detection saves lives.
Let’s use this Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a reminder to take care of ourselves, to stay on top of our health, and to encourage other women in our lives to do the same. Whether it’s through education, awareness, or just making time for that doctor’s visit, every step counts.
