October is the perfect time to curl up with a good book, especially as the days get shorter and the air gets cooler. This month, I’m diving into a mix of urban fiction, true crime, and spooky thrillers that are perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit. Whether you’re looking for something chilling or just a great story to escape into, here’s a list of 5-10 October book recommendations that I’m excited to read this month.
Plus, I’m kicking off an October Book Challenge! I’ll be sharing my progress and reviews on our Instagram Stories, so follow along if you want some extra reading inspiration.
Here’s what’s on my list:
For true crime lovers who can’t get enough of chilling thrillers, The Butcher Game is a must-read this October. Written by Alaina Urquhart, host of the popular "Morbid" podcast, this book follows forensic pathologist Wren Muller as she tracks a gruesome serial killer known for playing deadly games with his victims. The suspense is intense, the twists are dark, and it’s a story that will leave you glued to the pages. Perfect for those of us who love true crime and psychological thrillers!
For those looking to add a little spookiness to their October reading, Home Before Dark is a must. This haunted house thriller is full of mystery, ghostly encounters, and suspense. It’s a page-turner that keeps you guessing, with some serious Halloween vibes. I’m already feeling chills just thinking about it!
One of the most iconic urban fiction novels of all time, The Coldest Winter Ever is a gripping story of Winter Santiaga, the daughter of a notorious drug lord, and her dramatic fall from wealth and power. It’s a raw, gritty, and unforgettable read that takes you deep into the urban landscape. If you haven’t read this one yet, now’s the time.
If you’re a true crime fan, this book needs to be on your list. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is an in-depth investigation into the Golden State Killer, written by the late Michelle McNamara. Her dedication to uncovering the truth is captivating, and the book is as chilling as it is powerful. It’s perfect for those nights when you want something to keep you on edge.
Looking for something eerie with a gothic twist? Mexican Gothic blends Mexican folklore with classic horror in a story about a woman who uncovers dark secrets in a crumbling mansion. With its gothic vibes and creepy atmosphere, it’s a great pick for October, especially if you’re in the mood for something unique and haunting.
For fans of urban fiction with a gritty edge, The Cartel is a must-read. It dives into the world of drug cartels, corruption, and power in Mexico. The story is brutal, raw, and compelling, offering a look into the dangerous world of the drug trade. It’s intense but impossible to put down.
This psychological thriller has been getting rave reviews, and for good reason. The Silent Patient tells the story of a woman who shoots her husband and then stops speaking. The suspense builds as a psychotherapist tries to uncover the truth behind her silence. If you love a good psychological twist, this one’s for you.
This quirky thriller follows two sisters, one of whom is—yes—a serial killer. Set in Lagos, this darkly funny and twisted story is perfect if you’re looking for something that mixes humor with crime. It’s a fast-paced and entertaining read that’ll have you turning pages late into the night.
If you’re a fan of domestic thrillers, The Wife Between Us is packed with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. It’s a story of love, lies, and betrayal, told in a way that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The surprises in this one are so good, and it’s perfect for fans of psychological drama.
Ruth Ware is known for her atmospheric thrillers, and The Turn of the Key is no exception. This modern take on the haunted house story is chilling, with plenty of suspense and an unreliable narrator to keep you guessing. It’s eerie and perfectly fitting for those chilly October nights.

Whether you're into true crime, urban fiction, or something spooky for the season, there’s something on this list for every mom who loves to read. Don't forget to follow along with my October Book Challenge on Instagram, where I’ll be sharing my thoughts and progress as I make my way through these reads. Let’s make this October all about cozying up with a good book (or five)!
