The results of the 2024 presidential election are in, and while the outcome may not have been what we hoped for, it's a powerful opportunity to speak to our kids about resilience, hope, and the importance of being true to oneself. As a Black mother and a small business owner who celebrates motherhood, Black history, and the incredible power of women, I believe these conversations are essential. Our kids are watching, and they’re looking to us for guidance on how to process this moment.
For younger children, explain the election simply by saying that sometimes the people we want to win don’t, and that’s okay. What matters is that we still have a voice, and we can keep working toward positive change. With older kids, you might dive a bit deeper, discussing the importance of voting, the impact of leaders, and how each generation plays a role in shaping the future.
While we might feel disappointed, it’s essential to show our children that we don’t give up when things don’t go our way. I’ve been inspired by Kamala Harris, her resilience, and her unwavering strength. Her "Black Girl Magic" is a testament to the power of staying true to oneself. I remind my daughters that they are strong, capable, and in control of their own futures. We can all carry forward the mantra that “We are our Ancestors' Wildest Dreams.”
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the groundbreaking accomplishments of leaders like Kamala Harris, who became the first female Vice President. Her achievement is a reminder to our girls and boys that dreams are worth chasing, no matter the obstacles. I’ll be including a free coloring page below featuring Kamala, highlighting her legacy and inspiring our children to dream big.
No matter who holds office, we each have the power to make change. Teach your kids that leadership isn’t just about who’s in the White House but also about the small ways they can make a difference every day—in their schools, communities, and homes. We can all contribute to creating a more inclusive, compassionate world.
Encourage your children to set goals, pursue their passions, and believe in themselves. I'm excited to share our new "Dream Big Like Kamala Harris" t-shirts and sweatshirts as a way to keep that message alive and empower our kids to dream without limits.
Together, let’s use this moment to inspire our children to keep moving forward, knowing they hold the power to shape the future. By teaching resilience, pride, and a dedication to change, we are building the next generation of leaders who will carry on the dreams of those who came before us.
