If your kids are anything like mine, summer break means “I’m bored” every 15 minutes - especially when it’s too hot to be outside for long. But don’t worry, mama - you don’t have to run to the craft store or spend a ton of money to keep them busy.
Here are some of our favorite easy DIY summer crafts using supplies you probably already have at home. These are fun, creative, and low-stress - perfect for Philly moms juggling work, snacks, and summer chaos.
What you need: dry pasta (penne or rigatoni), string or yarn, food coloring or paint
Let your littles create their own colorful jewelry. Paint the pasta with food coloring or washable paint, let it dry, and string it up. Great for fine motor skills and makes the cutest “look what I made!” moment.
What you need: paper, glue, nature items (leaves, twigs, petals)
Go on a quick walk around the block or backyard. Let the kids collect nature finds, then come home and glue them down to create their own “summer memory” collage.
What you need: two empty toilet paper rolls, tape or stapler, string, crayons or markers
Have them decorate the rolls, tape them together side by side, and add a string to wear around their neck. Now they’re ready to go “exploring” around the house or porch.
What you need: paper plates, craft sticks or spoons, markers, glue
Let them draw summer scenes on a paper plate, fold it accordion-style, and glue to a stick. Instant summer breeze. Bonus: it actually helps with the heat!
Set up a little “craft corner” with all the basics in one bin - markers, glue sticks, safety scissors, paper scraps — so the kids can grab and go while you sip your iced coffee in peace (even if it’s just for 10 minutes 🙃).
Crafting doesn’t have to be fancy to be meaningful. These simple DIYs are how we slow down and soak in the joy of summer - one paper plate and pasta necklace at a time.
