5 Ways to Celebrate Black History All Year Long

5 Ways to Celebrate Black History Month While Black History Month is coming to an end, there's still ways to celebrate and honor black history all year long! Here's five ways we celebrate black history 365 days a year:
1.  Read Books Written By Black Authors
Celebrate black culture by supporting black authors. While I enjoy reading with my children, spending some of my down time reading, has been great for my mental health. I recommend checking out these newest hits:
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi
Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson
Kindred by Octavia Butler
What Never Happened by Rachel Howzell Hall
And if you're looking for new books to read with your kiddos, check out these:
Hey Black Child by Useni Eugene
Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
Black Girls like Me by Mariama J Lockington
2. Visit an African American Museum
African Americans museums are a great way to learn about the history of black people. One of our favorite museums here in Philly, The African American Museum in Philadelphia, offers amazing exhibits through the year. We're excited to explore the new Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America Exhibition which opens March 23rd. Be sure to check out the list of AA Museums we linked here.
3. Add New Black Ran Podcasts to Your Queue
Podcasts are a great way to learn about new things or even old things. If you're anything like me, I LOVE a good true crime podcast. During Covid, I learned about two great podcasts created by black women: Black Girl Gone: A True Crime Podcast and Sistas Who Kill: A True Crime Podcast. Both highlight cases of black and brown women.
If you're not into true crime, no worries, check out these podcasts:
Black History Year
Therapy for Black Girls
Black Girl Film Club
Diary of a Mad Black Man
4. Support Black Owned Businesses
Whenever I say "support black owned businesses" I'm often met with; "I don't shop based off of color", and while this may be true for many, it's important that we intentionally support businesses ran by minorities. Supporting minority owned businesses supports black communities and helps close the wealth gap.
Supporting black communities helps strengthen the economy, which also brings jobs and more resources into less served communities. Supporting small businesses doesn't mean you must only support through money. Give your time and advocacy. As a black owned, small business, I am so grateful for the referrals and social media shares.
Here are a few black owned businesses I'd like to share with you:
  • Ceramic Concept PHL - hand crafted pottery
  • GenZ Jewelz - handmade jewelry
  • Vintage Jawn- vintage pieces
No matter what day or month of the year it is. Celebrate black history every day!  And be sure to check out our BLACK 3 6 5 collection for your kids pro black t-shirts and sweatshirts!
