Celebrate Freedom, Family, and Black History with These Powerful Reads for Kids
Juneteenth is more than just a day off - it’s a powerful opportunity to talk with your children about history, resilience, and freedom. One of the most meaningful ways to celebrate Juneteenth with kids is through books that uplift Black voices and tell our stories with truth and joy.
Whether your little ones are learning about Juneteenth for the first time or you’re building a tradition in your home, reading together is a beautiful place to start.
We’re so excited to team up with Dr. Ramona, a school psychologist, millennial mom, and the voice behind Baby Book Doc. Dr. R's content focuses on elevating Black and Brown voices in children's literature, as well as sharing research-based tips for raising bookworms and emotionally intelligent little humans. Follow Dr. R (@babybookdoc) on Instagram and TikTok to keep up with her latest recommendations. Subscribe to Dr. R's FREE Substack newsletter, Office Hours, for a deeper look at all things kidlit (including a monthly book club), psychology, and mom-ing!
Below is a curated list of books she recommends for families celebrating Juneteenth in 2025. (We’ll link to each title so you can add them to your home library!)
Juneteenth Is by Natasha Tripplett, Daniel J. O'Brien (Illustrator)
The History of Juneteenth by Arlisha Norwood, PhD
