Let’s be real - screen time is part of modern parenting. Whether it’s tablets, TV shows, or video games, most kids spend time on screens daily. But with so much information out there about screen time limits and its effects, many moms wonder: Is screen time really that bad?
The short answer? It’s all about balance! Let’s break down the pros and cons of screen time and how to create a healthy approach for your family.
Screen time isn’t all bad! In fact, it can be educational, entertaining, and even a lifesaver for busy moms.
✅ Learning Opportunities: Many apps, shows, and games teach kids math, reading, and problem-solving skills in a fun way.
✅ Creativity & Expression: Digital tools let kids draw, code, create music, and explore new ideas.
✅ Social Connection: Video calls with family, online learning, and multiplayer games help kids stay connected.
✅ Mom’s Best Friend: Sometimes, a little screen time gives moms the break we need to get things done or just breathe for a second!
Too much screen time can have downsides, especially if it’s unstructured or replaces other important activities.
❌ Less Physical Activity: Kids need to run, jump, and play to stay healthy. Too much screen time can limit movement.
❌ Sleep Disruptions: Blue light from screens can make it harder for kids to fall asleep if they’re on devices before bed.
❌ Meltdowns & Mood Swings: Ever had to pry a tablet away from a child? Too much screen time can make kids more irritable and less patient.
❌ Social & Emotional Delays: Kids need face-to-face interaction to develop social skills and emotional intelligence.
The key isn’t banning screens but using them wisely. Here’s how:
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
👶 Under 2 years old: Minimal screen time, except for video calls.
👧 2-5 years old: 1 hour of high-quality screen time per day.
🧒 6+ years old: No set limit, but encourage balance with other activities.
💡 Mom Tip: Use timers or parental controls to help manage screen time without the daily battle!
Not all screen time is equal. Educational apps, creative projects, and active games are much better than hours of mindless scrolling.
✔️ Good screen time: PBS Kids, National Geographic Kids, Duolingo, drawing apps
🚫 Not-so-great screen time: Endless YouTube videos or non-stop TikTok scrolling
Make sure screens don’t replace important things like outdoor play, family time, and reading.
🌳 Get Outside: Daily walks, playground trips, or backyard games
📚 Read Together: Swap one episode of a show for storytime before bed
🎨 Get Creative: Let kids draw, craft, or build something
Instead of passive screen time, turn it into a bonding experience!
🎥 Watch Together: Ask questions and discuss the show/movie.
🎮 Play Together: Try co-op video games or learning apps as a family.
🎤 Sing & Dance: YouTube dance tutorials or karaoke apps can be fun and active!
Having screen-free moments helps kids unplug and be present.
🚫 No screens at the dinner table
🚫 No screens 1 hour before bed
🚫 No screens during family outings
Screen time isn’t the enemy—it’s all about how we use it. By setting limits, choosing quality content, and encouraging other activities, we can help our kids develop healthy habits while still enjoying the benefits of technology.
