The United States is facing significant changes with new leadership, and many families are feeling the effects of policies targeting immigrants, including ICE raids and stricter immigration enforcement. As parents, it’s critical to help our children understand what’s happening in the world in a way that aligns with our values of empathy, kindness, and justice.
Here’s how we can navigate these tough conversations with our kids and offer support to immigrant families during these challenging times.
Children process information differently depending on their age, so tailor your approach to their developmental level.
Encourage questions and create an open space for dialogue. Kids may hear things at school or online, so letting them know they can always come to you is important.
Teach your children that immigrants are people who contribute to our communities in countless ways. Share stories about how immigrants bring diversity, culture, and talent to our country.
Remind them that being kind and standing up for what’s right is something they can practice every day. A simple act, like standing up for a friend who feels left out or learning about a new culture, can make a difference.

For older kids:
For teens:
Reading these books together can open the door for meaningful discussions about immigration and empathy.
Kids learn from what they see. Show them how you support immigrant communities by advocating for justice, sharing resources, or simply being kind to those who may feel scared or unwelcome.
Talking to kids about immigration and the current political climate can feel overwhelming, but it’s also an opportunity to instill values of empathy, justice, and action. By having honest conversations, sharing stories, and standing up for what’s right, we can raise a generation of kids who care deeply for others and believe in building a better future.
