The presidential inauguration is more than just a ceremony—it's a reminder of the power of democracy and the importance of civic engagement. As a Black woman, small business owner, and mom, I believe these moments are a chance to inspire our kids and teach them about history, leadership, and their own potential to create change.
Here are a few ways to talk to kids about the inauguration:
Start with the Basics
Explain what an inauguration is and why it’s important. Use simple terms like “It’s the day we welcome a new president to lead our country.” Tailor your explanation based on your child’s age and understanding.
Highlight the History
Share fun or impactful facts about past inaugurations. For younger kids, focus on visual elements like the ceremony, parades, or how past presidents took their oath. For older kids, discuss the significance of peaceful power transitions.
Discuss the Values
Talk about values like leadership, integrity, and the power of voting. Share stories about leaders who’ve inspired you or your family and encourage kids to think about how they can lead in their own ways.
Get Them Involved
Have your child draw a picture of what leadership looks like to them or write a “speech” about what they’d do if they were president. These little activities make it fun and relatable.
Remember, teaching our kids about moments like this helps them see themselves as part of the bigger story of this country. These are the conversations that plant seeds of hope and action.
