When we first started homeschooling, I’ll be honest - I was overwhelmed. I worried if I was doing it “right,” if I had the right books, the right schedule, the right everything. Now that we’re a little further into the journey, I’ve learned so much (and I’m still learning!).

So if you’re just starting out or considering homeschool for your family, here are a few things I wish someone would’ve told me from the beginning - mama to mama.
Seriously. What works for one family may not work for yours - and that’s okay. Some families do strict schedules, others are more relaxed. Some use full curriculums, others blend different resources. Don’t stress about fitting into a mold. Find what feels right for your family’s rhythm.
At first, I tried to mimic a full school day - desks, bells, hours of work. That just burned everyone out (me included). Homeschooling gives you flexibility - use it! Shorter lessons, hands-on activities, field trips, breaks for movement or art - it all counts.
Before homeschooling, you taught your kids how to walk, talk, tie their shoes, and navigate the world. You are more capable than you think. Homeschooling is just an extension of that - you don’t have to be perfect, just present and willing.
Homeschooling can feel isolating at first, but there are amazing communities out there - both online and locally. Look for:
Co-ops and meetups
Library or museum programs
Facebook groups for homeschoolers or local-area families
Don’t be afraid to reach out. Support makes all the difference.
You’ll try things that don’t work. You’ll switch curriculums, rethink routines, or just take a break when needed. That’s not failure - that’s growth. Homeschooling is a journey, not a checklist.
One of the biggest blessings of homeschooling has been curating books, lessons, and experiences that reflect who we are - our culture, our history, our values. Don’t be afraid to center Black and POC voices in your learning.
There will be days when the math isn’t mathing and the toddler is melting down. On those days, give yourself (and your kids) grace. Remember why you chose this path, and know that rest is part of the work.

Homeschooling isn’t easy, but it’s beautiful. It’s messy, meaningful, and full of little moments you’ll treasure forever. If you’re starting out - you’ve got this, mama. And if you ever feel unsure, know you’re not alone.
