We love celebrating local stories that inspire kindness, creativity, and representation - and this one is truly special! 💛
Cheltenham Elementary art teacher and author Andrew Vassall recently announced that his children’s book, The Black Crayon, has been picked up as part of the Compassionate Crayon Series - a nationwide collection of books that encourage empathy and understanding through colorful storytelling.

Vassall’s story centers on a young black crayon who feels out of place in a box full of bright colors - until he learns that every shade has a purpose. The book uses simple, kid-friendly language to help children explore themes of diversity, belonging, and self-acceptance.
The story’s message resonates with families, teachers, and kids everywhere: that everyone - no matter their color, background, or differences - brings something valuable and beautiful to the world.
The Compassionate Crayon Series features stories that teach emotional intelligence, kindness, and inclusivity in creative, age-appropriate ways. By joining this series, The Black Crayon will reach classrooms and families across the country, helping children learn empathy through art and storytelling.
You can read the full article from the Cheltenham School District here and follow updates about The Black Crayon through the Compassionate Crayon Series.
This is one of those feel-good stories that reminds us how powerful creativity can be - especially when it comes from our own community.
