Fun, family-friendly ideas to get you out of the house (and off screens)
Winter break is exciting for kids… and a little overwhelming for parents. If you’re looking for things to do over winter break in Philly that are fun, educational, and actually enjoyable for the whole family, here are some tried-and-true favorites — including spots we’ve visited and loved.
Whether you’re planning full days out or just a few special activities, these are great options to mix learning, play, and holiday magic.
If you have kids who love hands-on learning, the Franklin Institute is always a win. We recently visited and had such a great time — there’s truly something for every age.

Why we love it:
Interactive science exhibits
The giant heart (a Philly classic)
Space, sports, and tech experiences
Perfect for burning energy on cold days
This is a great full-day outing for elementary-age kids and up.
For toddlers and preschoolers, the Please Touch Museum is a winter break lifesaver. It’s playful, imaginative, and designed just for little hands and big curiosity.

Highlights:
Role-play exhibits
Climbing and movement spaces
Seasonal programming
A warm, welcoming space for younger kids
If you have smaller kiddos, this one is always worth it.

If your kids enjoy books and live performances, the Arden Theatre’s production of A Wrinkle in Time is a wonderful winter break treat.
Why it’s special:
Based on the beloved book
Great introduction to live theatre for kids
Thoughtful storytelling with imagination and heart
Perfect for older elementary and middle school kids
This is a great way to mix culture, literacy, and a memorable family outing.
The Penn Museum is offering free admission over winter break, making it an amazing budget-friendly option for families.

What my kids love:
Ancient artifacts
Mummies (always a hit)
Hands-on discovery areas
Big, open galleries to explore
It’s educational without feeling boring — and free makes it even better.
If you’re planning ahead for New Year’s Eve, Philly has several kid-friendly celebrations that let families celebrate without staying up until midnight.

Popular spots include:
Other early countdown events around the city
✨ I’ll be sharing a separate, detailed blog with New Year’s Eve events for kids in Philly - stay tuned!
You don’t need to fill every day with plans. A few intentional outings mixed with cozy days at home is the sweet spot. Philly offers so many great winter break activities for kids - especially when museums, theaters, and cultural spaces lean into family programming this time of year.
Pick one or two highlights, build in rest, and enjoy the slower pace.
