Meaningful ways for Philly families to celebrate Kwanzaa with kids
Kwanzaa is a beautiful time to slow down, reflect, and celebrate culture, community, and togetherness. If you’re looking for family-friendly Kwanzaa events in Philadelphia, there are several wonderful opportunities around the city where kids can learn, create, and celebrate in age-appropriate, engaging ways.
Here are a few Philly Kwanzaa events perfect for families with kids.

📍 West Philly
📅 December 26 | 3 PM – 8 PM
Plant & People is hosting a free community celebration for Umoja (Unity), the first day of Kwanzaa. This event is family-friendly and includes children’s storytimes, crafts, music, a candle lighting ceremony, and community connection.
✨ Local moms note: Plant & People also has our Kwanzaa tees in stock at their West Philly location - perfect if you’re looking for something meaningful for your kids to wear during the holiday.
📅 December 28

The Please Touch Museum is hosting a special Kwanzaa celebration designed for kids, featuring hands-on art activities and an interactive African drum circle. Children can paint their own Kwanzaa table and learn through music and movement - a beautiful introduction to Kwanzaa traditions for younger kids.
This is a great option for toddlers and elementary-age children.
📍 Parkway Central Library
📅 December 26 & 27 | 12 PM – 3 PM

The Free Library is hosting a two-day Kwanzaa celebration honoring the history and traditions of Kwanzaa in partnership with Kwanzaa Cooperative. Families can enjoy live performances, activities, and cultural programming.
📅 December 29 | 2:30 PM
This sweet and simple Kwanzaa event is perfect for younger kids. Families can enjoy a Kwanzaa storytime followed by kinara coloring, making it a calm and meaningful way to introduce children to Kwanzaa symbols and traditions.
One of the things I love most about Philly is how many cultural, community-centered events are available for families - especially during the holidays. These Kwanzaa events offer children a chance to learn through stories, art, music, and shared experiences.
Whether you attend one event or several, each one is a beautiful way to honor the principles of Kwanzaa with your kids.
